A couple of weeks ago I was at the local Harvey Norman store shopping for a protective case for my wife's iPod. Talking with one of the sales staff, I was told that there is talk of a Harvey Norman exclusive for at least the first couple of months of the Australian release of the iPhone. I asked if they would be locked like they are in the U.S. and she was not aware that they were locked in the U.S.
Oh dear...
According to Market Watch, Telstra are in negotiations with Apple, but to get the phone Down Under it needs to be compatible with the Next G network which is just a 3G (Third Generation) network operating at a lower frequency (850MHz instead of 2100MHz) so it will travel a greater geographic distance... so we are told.
So when iPhone version 2 is released in Australia, its looking like every big company in Australia wants a piece. I can see an iPhone that is only sold in Apple stores or at Harvey Norman and sim-locked to Telstra.
That's a hefty price to pay...
